Abstract Landscape

“All art begins with movement–the movement of the artist’s hand drawing a paintbrush across the canvas, as well as the movement of ideas in the artist’s mind.”

I used to tell my students, “Drawing starts with movement.” In this ongoing series of abstract landscape-inspired compositions I move between between conscious and unconscious intent. As I sketch with soft vine charcoal I can allow the movement of my hand across the surface to suggest a direction for the painting. One mark or motion leads to the next. At times, these paintings reference elements from nature while at other times they are less referential, simply evoking movement, spaces, and various energetics. This series is ongoing. RB 2021
