Abstract Landscape

“All art begins with movement–the movement of a hand pulling a paintbrush across the canvas, and the movement of ideas in the artist’s mind.”  Robin Brooks

I used to tell my students, “Drawing starts with movement.” This is true for painting too. In my ongoing series of abstract landscape-inspired compositions I move between between conscious and unconscious intent. To start, I sketch with soft vine charcoal. This drawing process, moving my hand across the surface, begins to suggest a direction for the painting. One mark or motion leads to the next. At times, these paintings reference elements from nature while at other times they are less referential, simply evoking movement, spaces, and various energetics–the abstract energy of the landscape as seen and felt as I move through it. This series is ongoing. RB 2022
