Acadia National Park on the Schoodic Penninsula
In April of 2016, I was invited to spend fourteen days living and working at the Schoodic Institute at Acadia National Park in Gouldsboro, Maine. Importantly, the Schoodic region and all of Maine are the ancestral lands of the Wabanaki people. Thanks to it’s protected status, Acadia National Park at Schoodic is a stunning and vital ecosystem today. I created all the artworks in this gallery during my time at Acadia/Schoodic. Each day during my residency I packed art supplies for my hikes and forays into the woods and along the shoreline. I loved waking early to watch the sun rise over the ocean, all the while taking in the ambient sounds of birds and waves rolling over the cobble beach.
Inspiration at Schoodic
I found the interface of rocky coastline, plant and animal life, water, and sky to be richly inspiring. Living in the midst of these protected lands gave me a deep appreciation for our National Parks and also for the park rangers, workers, and volunteers who help us understand the delicate balance of nature.
Donating a piece of artwork to Acadia National Park
As part of my obligation to Acadia, I donated one artwork from my residency. The painting I donated, entitled “Schoodic 1”, can be seen here: https://www.nps.gov/articles/000/acadia-air_brooks.htm and in-person in the dining hall at the Schoodic Institute as of August 2023.
