I recently visited the city of Montreal primarily to attend the Jazz Festival there. We also trekked to the Botanical Garden where my husband Jon snapped this photo.

Join me at Art Matters–my SubStack platform

Thank you for following me here on robinbrooksart and for your ongoing interest in my creative work. To stay up to date and reach a potentially wider readership, I launched my own SubStack blog at Art Matters. While I have been publishing Art Matters for the past year, I haven’t mentioned it here. No doubt, some of my readers have already found me there! Interestingly, I’ve discovered that SubStack has expanded my reach and I am enjoying the platform, despite the learning curve. I hope you’ll consider joining me there.

A Link to my most recent Art Matters article on Traveling

Follow this link to check out my most recent article about traveling entitled Traveling Part 2: Returning Home with new eyes. “Eyes to see, heart to feel–the discomfort and dislocation of travel can help us recalibrate our relationship to daily life.” Art Matters continues the work I have done here for well on two decades but in a space that is more public.

Writing is part of my creative process

It turns out that writing itself is integral part of my creative practice. I find this a bit of a surprise–not sure why that is–but nonetheless I am embracing it. Curiously, by publishing on Art Matters I have expanded my reach to several new readers. So, in short, I encourage you to become a subscriber to Art Matters. Importantly, please know that I don’t hide anything behind a paywall. It’s really about publishing my essays in a more public space, one where you can read and interact with my ideas and also where I can share articles I read that you may also enjoy.

Traveling and Change–Adapting to challenging times

I don’t know about you, but making art and traveling to see friends and family helps me to stay grounded in what is most important during these challenging times. So yes, we need to stay abreast of the news and do our best to sort out the wheat from the chaff. Additionally, as an activist for the common good, I am attentive to when and how I need to show up, A recent example was on June 9th, the day of Maine’s primary when I volunteered to collect signatures for a “Medicare for All” healthcare referendum.

above two photos are from my sketchbook during Storm Floris which hit my sister’s village of Pittenweem, Scotland with a fury on August 4th, 2025. The storm caused the arts festival to shut down, forcing us all indoors. Fortunately, there was plenty of beauty in my sister Julie’s home to draw from!

How writing has become part of my creative process as an artist

Keeping a journal has long been a way I have talked with myself, pondered questions, and explored possibilities. Over time I have discovered that writing can also help me clarify what I do in the art studio. The way I approach making in the studio is guided by intuition and my process is more often than not a non-verbal one while I am painting or making collages. That is, I don’t outline or write out what it is I plan to make. Rather, i allow the work to unfold or reveal itself through the interaction of my energy/vision and my materials. So when I write, I not only help myself understand my own work but I also can share those insights with my viewers and collectors.
