artist statement

This series of improvisational mixed media paintings was launched during the winter of 2012 and is ongoing.  Some are non-objective abstractions while others are more suggestive of natural forms such as trees, water, or rocks. I like to start by drawing with charcoal or brushing a gestural wash of acrylic paint. I may have an image in mind or I may simply begin with gesture and movement. Once I see the composition emerging I may add in textural elements–bits of textured papers and cloth–with glue. My color palette emerges in response to the overall design.  I am curious about the relationship between surface, form, light, and space in these compositions.
